Briefing from the Environment Agency
Ben Wallace MP – Wyre and Preston North Constituency
6th Dec 2015
I would like to provide an update on the flooding situation in your constituency area after heavy rainfall over the weekend.
We currently have two breaches in the embankment at the confluence of the River Brock with the River Wyre at Hall Lane, St Michaels. We have 18 operational staff on site with five 6-inch pumps and are in contact with the Police to arrange road closures. Sandbags are being provided by Wyre Borough Council to protect individual properties.
Overnight we operated flood basins at Garstang and Catterall on the River Wyre. Collectively the two basins hold 3 Million cubic metres of flood water (equivalent to 1200 Olympic size swimming pools). We are now empting these basins very slowly as river levels allow.
For further information on flood alerts and warnings please visit the GOV.UK website at https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding or via #floodaware on Twitter and Facebook. People can also call our 24-hour Floodline number on: 0345 988 1188.
Everyone is advised to stay away from swollen rivers and if they are travelling, to check the flood risk before setting off and not to drive through floodwater.
